A bayonet is a blade that can be affixed to the fore-end or muzzle of a rifle that has been designed to accept such a device. A bayonet allows the rifle to be used as a piercing weapon. Its use originated with muzzle-loading rifles, which required some time to reload, leaving its user vulnerable to attack between shots.
