The diameter of a bullet is matched to the inner diameter of the barrel so that the pressurized gas of the burning propellant pushes the bullet forward and does not escape around it.
Modern bullets are typically made of a lead core with a copper jacket, although solid copper bullets are becoming common. Early bullets were unjacketed lead, and bullets of this type are still used occasionally.
