compensator

A device attached to the muzzle of a firearm, or sometimes incorporated as a feature of the barrel, which allows pressurized gas behind the bullet to jet upward as the bullet passes. The upward momentum of the escaping gas pushes the muzzle in a downward direction, thus counteracting muzzle climb.

A muzzle brake may also direct gasses upward, giving it the dual functionality of a brake and a compensator.
